23 Dec Travel Diary: Tropea, Calabria, Italy
Tropea is one of those places that feels untouched in the best way. Perched high above electric-blue water, this small Calabrian town blends dramatic coastline, incredible food, and a rhythm of life that’s slow by day and joyful by night.
It’s walkable, lively, deeply Italian, and endlessly photogenic. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay a few days and immediately wish you’d booked longer, as it gently pulls you out of everyday life and back into the moment.
Tropea is a reminder that the most memorable places are the ones that slow you down and show you how beautifully simple life can be.
Where to Stay in Tropea
I can’t recommend Hotel La Dolce Vita enough. Set high above the beach, it offers breathtaking sunrises and sunsets overlooking Tropea’s iconic church, the coastline, and endless shades of blue.
It’s the kind of hotel where mornings feel sacred as you enjoy your coffee on the terrace, with soft light, and the sea stretching out below you. And the sunsets are just magical with a glass of prosecco in hand.
Beaches, Boat Days & Caves
The real magic of Tropea is at sea.
By day, beach clubs line the coast, which is perfect for long swims, snorkeling, and doing very little else other than refueling with some seafood pasta along the way. The water is impossibly clear, ideal for floating, exploring caves, and watching the light shift across the cliffs.
Top tip: If you can, hire a private boat. It allows you to explore the coastline at your own pace, swim in hidden spots, and experience Tropea from the water’s viewpoint.
And a head’s up! There are a lot of stairs down to the beaches, but trust me, if you stay all day, then take your time heading back up at sunset, the views along the way are a beautiful part of the experience.
What to Eat in Tropea
Tropea’s food is all about classic southern Italian flavours done beautifully.
Taverna Antica Grotta
– Famous for their spaghetti alla Tropeana – it’s rich and simple yet completely addictive.
Ristorante Tre Fontane
– The pea carbonara was a surprising highlight of the trip: creamy yet balanced with salty guanciale, and deeply satisfying.
Finish your evenings with a gelato or lemon granita, always best enjoyed slowly, wandering through town as the air cools and the streets come alive. ‘Una passeggiata dopo cena’ is my favourite Italian ritual, and one of the most romantic parts of travelling through Italy.
Why I Loved Tropea
What stood out most is how Italian Tropea feels. This isn’t a place built for tourists, it’s a place where locals live, gather, sing, and celebrate. What I noticed:
- Mostly Italian visitors
- Small, walkable seaside town
- High energy at night – music, laughter, people singing in the restaurants
- Beautiful boutique shops and artisanal produce (lots of chilli and red onion products which are specialties of the region)
I promised myself I wouldn’t buy anything that trip, yet I somehow came home with jewellery, a dress, ceramics, and lemon print sarongs. I just couldn’t help but to bring a few little pieces of Tropea back with me to weave into my everyday life.
Is Tropea Worth Visiting?
Absolutely!! Tropea is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave and a destination I’d return to in a heartbeat.
Tropea is perfect if you’re looking for:
- A romantic Italian seaside escape
- Incredible food and wine
- Clear water and boat adventures
- Lively nights balanced by slow beach days
- A destination that still feels authentically Italian
It’s dramatic, joyful, flavour-filled, and completely unforgettable, the perfect honeymoon destination!
