Planning Your Destination Wedding in Greece
Crystal-clear waters, dramatic coastlines and golden Mediterranean light. Greece offers a beautiful setting for couples dreaming of a wedding that feels both extraordinary and deeply personal.
From the iconic sunsets of Santorini to the relaxed elegance of Crete and the vibrant atmosphere of Mykonos, each island offers something different. But beyond the scenery, a destination wedding is an opportunity to bring your favourite people together, slow down and create memories that last long after the celebrations end.
As a destination wedding celebrant, I had the pleasure of officiating a wedding in Chania, Crete, in June 2019 for an Australian couple. The couple brought their loved ones together at Saint Antoine Villa, a luxury villa with incredible views, creating a beautiful setting for a celebration shared with their favourite people.
It remains a wonderful example of how a breathtaking setting and thoughtful details can come together to create a truly memorable celebration.
If you are dreaming of a destination wedding in Greece, here are a few things to consider as you begin planning your celebration.
Finding Your Perfect Greek Island
Santorini is ideal for couples drawn to dramatic caldera views, whitewashed architecture and romantic sunset ceremonies. Its spectacular scenery makes it a natural choice for an intimate, elegant celebration.
Crete offers a different kind of beauty, combining rugged landscapes, beautiful beaches, historic towns and private villa settings. In Chania, you can enjoy the charm of the old town alongside the freedom and privacy of a coastal retreat. For couples wanting to spend quality time with their guests over several days, Crete offers plenty of possibilities.
Mykonos brings a chic, cosmopolitan atmosphere, with stylish venues, waterfront dining and a lively social scene. It is a wonderful option for couples who want their wedding to flow seamlessly into an evening of exceptional food, cocktails and dancing.
Ultimately, the right destination is the one that reflects your personality and the experience you want to share with your guests.
A Real Crete Wedding
In June 2019, I officiated a symbolic wedding ceremony at Saint Antoine Villa in Chania, Crete.
The couple chose this strikingly modern villa with an incredible rock backdrop. The neutral tones of the wedding party created a beautiful contrast against the scale and texture of the natural landscape, while simple perspex pillars adorned with white orchids framed the altar. With white chairs arranged for the 60 guests with a cello and violin duo adding to the atmosphere, the setting felt elegant without being overdone.
What made this wedding so memorable was the balance between the dramatic landscape and the simplicity of the styling. Nothing needed to compete with the view.
For couples considering a private villa wedding, it is a lovely example of how thoughtful details, meaningful contributions from loved ones and the right setting can create an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and personal.
Creating a Ceremony That Feels Like You
A beautiful location sets the scene, but your ceremony is the heart of the celebration.
As a celebrant, I believe your wedding ceremony should reflect your relationship, your personalities and the promises you want to make to one another. Whether you envision an intimate exchange of vows overlooking the sea or a gathering surrounded by family and friends, the ceremony should feel natural, heartfelt and unmistakably yours.
A symbolic ceremony can offer flexibility for couples who choose to complete their legal marriage separately. It also allows space for personal vows, meaningful readings, family involvement and cultural traditions that tell your story.
I work with each couple to create a ceremony that feels genuine rather than scripted, with the right balance of emotion, warmth and personality.
For wedding planners, working with a celebrant who values collaboration and clear communication can also help ensure the ceremony fits beautifully into the wider celebration.
Make It a Wedding Weekend
One of the joys of marrying in Greece is having the opportunity to celebrate beyond the wedding day itself.
A welcome dinner, a boat trip along the coastline, a relaxed beachside lunch or a farewell brunch can turn your wedding into a shared experience rather than a single event. Local food, music and cultural touches can make the celebration feel connected to its destination.
When planning, consider the time of year, guest travel arrangements, outdoor comfort and accommodation early. A wedding planner can be invaluable in coordinating suppliers and logistics, particularly when you are organising everything from overseas.
The goal is not to fill every moment with activities, but to create opportunities for your guests to connect and enjoy being together.
